Brief History of Some Honda Brand of Cars

Many cars have been produced by Honda over the last few decades. Some are even still being produced today. Below is an overview of the Honda Accord, the most popular of the Honda vehicles.

Honda Accord

The Honda Accord is the pioneer of all Honda types of cars and it was first introduced in the market 1975. The Accord began as a compact car in Japan and Europe in 1975, mid-size car in 1990 and a full-size car in 2008 as a sedan. In North America it began as compact car in1976 graduating to mid-size car in 1990 (sedan) and 1994 (coupe) and full-size car in 2008 (sedan) and 2010 (Crosstour).

It was manufactured in Sayama, Japan and in 1982 production crossed the Pacific Ocean to Marysville, Ohio, USA, to become the first Japanese car to be produced in the United States of America. Later, production centres have been created in Nelson, New Zealand; Swidon, England; Guanzhou, China and Ayutthaya, Thailand, to cater for the expanded market. The Accord has made considerable success especially in the United States of America market where it was the best–selling Japanese car for 15 years and considered the most reliable car. The Accord has undergone different body styles with initial compact hatchback changing to a sedan, coupe and the wagon with each style except the hatchback which lasted till 1981, existing to date.

The first generation of the Honda Accord came up in 1976 through 1981 in Sayama, Japan. It was a compact car with a 3-door hatchback and 4-door sedan with an engine capacity of 1.6 litres and 1.8 litres. It came with a 2-speed and 3-speed automatic and a 5-speed manual transmission. This car was a hit in the United States because of its moderate size and fuel economy.

The second generation came about in 1982 to1985 and was also known as Honda Vigor in Japan. Most of the specifications were as in the first generation except that the automatic transmission was upgraded to 4-speed gear from the previous 3-speed gear among other changes.

The third generation was in 1986 through 1989 and came up with a 2-door coupe and 3-door station wagon in addition to the hatchback and the sedan and featured a 2.0 litre engine.

The fourth generation came up in 1990 through 1993 with enhanced safety features. This period also saw manufacture of sister model called Honda Ascot.

The fifth generation saw production of another class – the Mid-size vehicle with a larger engine capacity of 2.7litres among other changes.

 

There has been sixth, seventh and the eighth generation with different specifications but largely improvements of the previous generations.

Among the awards that the Accord has scooped include the 2006 ConsumerSearch’s “Best Family Car” and Motor Trend’s 1994 “Import Car of the Year” award.

Honda Civic Hybrid

Production of the Honda Civic Hybrid commenced in 2001 in Suzuka, Mie, Japan. This is a compact car and comes as a 4-door sedan or 5-door hatchback (from 2012 in Europe) with a front-engine front-wheel drive and is actually a hybrid version of Honda Civic that uses both gasoline and electric hybrid system.

The first generation came about in 2001 to 2005 and this vehicle is estimated to be 40% more fuel efficient than its non-hybrid counterparts. Some of the awards that this Civic Hybrid’s engine has won include The International Engine of the Year (1 litre to 1.4 litre category) from 2002 to 2004

The second generation of this Civic Hybrid was 2005 to 2011 and features a 1.3 litre and 156 volt 15 kW electric engine. It is the second best selling electric hybrid car in the US. The Civic Hybrid has been introduced in China and Malaysia in 2007 and in India in 2008.

Honda CR- V

The Honda CR-V was first produced in 1995 by Honda Company as a Compact Crossover Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV). It is a four-door SUV and has transversely mounted front engine with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The Honda CR-V is manufactured in Japan and the United Kingdom for the worldwide markets while the USA and Canada vehicles are produced in East Liberty in the Ohio State, the other production centre being Wuhan for the Chinese market.

The first generation of the Honda CR-Vs was in 1995 to 2001 and had production of 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission systems and was powered by 2.0 litre engine. It had standard driver and passenger airbags to enhance its safety.

The second generation of this vehicle was produced in 2001 to 2006 and was assembled in England, Thailand, China, Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines. It had a 5-speed and 6-speed manual transmission and 4-speed and 5-speed automatic transmissions. Some other changes included new taillights and head lights with clear indicators.

The third generation of the Honda CR-Vs commenced in 2007 to date and some of the additional production centres were created to meet the growing demand and included Indonesia, Vietnam and Mexico with production of only 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions.

Honda Crosstour

The Honda Crosstour is the latest model of Honda Company. It is a full-sized hatchback and is a modified model of the Honda Accord. It comes with 3.5 litre engine and one can choose between front-wheel and all-wheel drive. Among the markets that it is available include the United States, China, Russia, Mexico and Canada.

Honda Element

The Honda Element has been manufactured by Honda Company since 2003 and is also assembled in East Liberty, Ohio, USA. It is produced as a 5-door Compact Crossover Sports Utility Vehicle/economy vehicle with a 2.4 litre front engine, front-wheel or four-wheel drive. It comes with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed/5-speed automatic transmission. This vehicle was designed to combine the features of a pickup truck and a sport utility vehicle. It is a 4 seater vehicle designed to carry large loads.
